Black Hills Regional Eye Institute Welcomes Dr. Berbos

Zachary J. Berbos, MD, FACS

Black Hills Regional Eye Institute is proud to announce that South Dakota native, Dr. Zachary J. Berbos, MD, FACS, will be joining the team, bringing a wealth of experience in oculoplastic surgery to benefit patients in the Black Hills region. Dr. Berbos is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Berbos specializes in treating conditions involving the eyebrows, forehead, eyelids, orbit (eye socket), lacrimal (tear) system, mid-face, and lower face. He has a particular interest in cosmetic facial surgery, as well as eyelid and facial reconstruction following skin cancer removal. The oculoplastic services that he will be providing at the Eye Institute includes eyelid surgery, eyebrow and forehead surgery, orbital surgery, tear-drain surgery, and cosmetic injections for facial rejuvenation.

Born and raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Dr. Berbos graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a minor in Religion and Philosophy at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. He attended medical school at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and graduated with the highest honors in all fields of study. He went on to complete his residency at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Ophthalmology, where he was honored by serving as Chief Resident in his final year and scored in the top 1% nationally on his Ophthalmology board exams. He completed a two-year fellowship in Cosmetic and Functional Oculoplastic and Facial Surgery in Salt Lake City, Utah, recognized as one of the top training programs in the nation for oculoplastic surgery.

In addition to publishing many peer-reviewed medical journal articles, research studies, and textbook chapters, Dr. Berbos gives lectures locally and nationally on the subject of facial plastic surgery. He holds an appointment as an adjunct clinical professor at Creighton Medical School and serves as a guest instructor at the University of Arizona Medical School for Gross Anatomy where he focuses on head and neck dissection.

Dr. Berbos is returning to South Dakota with his wife, Fleur, and son, Oliver. They enjoy many outdoor activities, live music, and are excited to be returning to the heartland!
