Eye Institute Sponsorship Gives Injured Dog a Bright Future
The Black Hills Regional Eye Institute has been proud to partner with the Humane Society of the Black Hills to provide emergency services to a stray canine in need of treatment for a severely infected eye injury. The dog, who was brought in on November 6th by the Rapid City Police Department, has now received the treatment he needs to regain his health and get ready for his furever home!
The adult Labrador mix, who is described as “very quiet, gentle and loving,” has been eager to receive the help of humans from the moment he entered the shelter doors with no name and no known owner. Based on the condition of his teeth, he has been estimated to be between the ages of 5 and 6 years old. Sadly, he arrived with a very traumatic eye injury in his left eye that caused it to protrude from the socket. After a trip to the veterinarian, it was determined that he would need a full enucleation to successful treat the injured eye.
As a non-profit organization, the Humane Society of the Black Hills relies on public funding and donations in order to provide care and shelter to the more than 4,000 animals that they help each year. High need cases such as this require special help from the community, so the Humane Society reached out to local businesses in their new medical sponsorship program for assistance with the $1,000 bill.
Black Hills Regional Eye Institute was glad to step in as the program’s first major medical sponsor, and three days after his arrival to the shelter, our canine friend underwent a successful enucleation. He was also neutered in the weeks that followed and is healing well from both procedures.
While he’s been resting and basking in the love and attention he is receiving, he also received a name thanks to the Eye Institute team: Odin! Odin loves to spend quiet time in the front offices of the Humane Society, where he gets plenty of snuggles and lots of love. His spunky personality is even starting to shine through! We are happy to say that he is well on his way to being ready to join his new family in his forever home.
For over 50 years, the Humane Society of the Black Hills has worked with the community to provide rescue services to local animals of all kinds, from the furry to the scaly. They are currently the only major animal shelter in western South Dakota and they receive animals from as many as 20 different counties.
