From Post-Secondary to Residency

Dr. Michael daSilva began his journey to ophthalmology at the University of Nebraska, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. He earned his Medical Doctorate with distinction from the University of Nebraska, where he was also awarded the highly regarded Regents Scholarship and admitted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society.

After receiving his Medical Doctorate, Dr. daSilva made his way to the Mount Rushmore state to complete his internship in general medicine at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine in Sioux Falls. He then went on to complete an ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles, California, which is one of the highest ranked ophthalmology programs in the nation.

Dr. daSilva has used the knowledge that he has amassed over the years to author several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on cataract surgery.

Building a Rewarding Career

Although Dr. daSilva provides general ophthalmology for the management of a variety of eye conditions such as diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, and trauma, one of primary focuses is cataract surgery. By using cutting-edge technology such as Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) and intraoperative biometry, Dr. daSilva can offer advanced cataract surgery options to the Black Hills. He also performs refractive procedures such as LASIK, PRK, and refractive lens exchange.

Bringing a Wealth of Expertise to Each Patient

Dr. daSilva’s vast experience in working with different intraocular lenses and surgical techniques has allowed him to treat presbyopia and reduce astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery, a skill that helps his patients reduce their dependence on corrective lenses. He has also received training in Microinvasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), which gives glaucoma patients options that let them rely less on pressure-lowering eye drops.

Dr. daSilva grows his knowledge and connections within the ophthalmology field as a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the Refractive Surgery Alliance.

Away from the Office

In his spare time, Dr. daSilva can often be found spending time with his wife Laura and their two children. He also enjoys spending times in the great outdoors, where he is an avid cyclist and fly fisherman.
