LASEK , or Laser Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy, is a laser eye surgical procedure designed to correct vision and reduce dependency on corrective lenses by reshaping the cornea. LASEK is very similar to PRK; however, with PRK the epithelial flap is removed entirely, while during LASEK it is merely folded back and then returned after the procedure. At the Black Hills Regional Eye Institute, we offer a range of laser eye surgical treatments, including LASEK and PRK to our patients in the Rapid City region. However, we perform only those treatments which exclusively utilize our advanced laser technology. During a personal consultation with one of our eye doctors, you will be evaluated, diagnosed, and prescribed a treatment plan tailored to meet your individual vision needs.
As previously mentioned, LASEK is very similar to PRK, and during your personal consultation we will be able to determine which treatment is ideal. Both procedures permanently change the shape of the cornea. Instead of creating a flap as in LASIK, during LASEK a solution is used to loosen the outermost layer of the cornea. This layer, called the epithelium, is removed during PRK, but during LASEK it is merely folded out the way of the laser treatment field. For patients whose epithelia are not strong enough to support folding, PRK is recommended.
Once laser ablation (reshaping of the cornea) has been completed, the epithelium is folded back into its original position. The reshaping performed by the laser allows light to focus properly on the retina, thus improving vision without glasses or contacts. LASEK surgery is performed while the eye is numb using local anesthesia, and an instrument called a speculum is used to prevent blinking. The LASEK procedure takes only about an hour or two, with recovery lasting about two to three weeks.
Depending on the degree of vision correction needed, the Black Hills Regional Eye Institute offers a range of treatment options, including LASEK to the Rapid City community. Our preferred surface treatment at Black Hills Regional Eye Institute is PRK. However, please contact us today to schedule a personal consultation with one of our doctors to learn about the best options for your eyes. Whether you want to learn more about LASEK or simply need directions, we can help and we look forward to hearing from you!
