Superior Technology Means Superior Vision

Laser Technology Rapid City

iLASIK_Suite_WhiteBackground.jpgThe Eye Institute has upgraded its iLASIK technologies to include the iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser. This laser technology is used in lieu of a metal blade for the crucial step of creating the LASIK flap in the cornea. Our experience with the bladeless IntraLase® system has been exceptional. Now, the Black Hills Regional Eye Institute has the most current, fifth-generation laser eye surgery system. This laser technology offers several improvements to the Rapid City community:

  • 10 second flap creation leading to less risk of flap complication and increased safety for the eyes
  • "Beveled" flap edge leading to increased flap strength and lower epithelial in-growth risk
  • Less laser energy required which results in less tissue inflammation after eye surgery
  • Oval flap customization for astigmatism vision correction
  • More user friendly ergonomics for staff and surgeon
  • The ability to perform laser enabled corneal transplants for those with advanced corneal eye disease

We have had excellent results with bladeless iLASIK. We're proud to be the only clinic in the region performing bladeless iLASIK with the iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser. With the iLASIK procedure, you can count on a procedure tailored to you, your vision, and the unique characteristics of your eyes. 3-D Custom WaveScan® mapping, precise measurement, and the use of two of the most advanced lasers (iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser and VISX CustomVue®) differentiate the iLASIK procedure from all others. In fact, after review of extensive military clinical data, NASA approved the iLASIK procedure for its astronauts, along with the US Navy and Air Force for Naval Top Gun Pilots and Air Force Pilots.

iFS Advanced Femtosecond Laser

Replacing the handheld microkeratome blade with laser technology improves safety by eliminating virtually all of the most severe, sight-threatening flap complications. Patient measurements guide the computer-driven laser to create a customized corneal flap with micro-precision, while simultaneously preparing an optimal corneal surface below the flap for better visual outcomes. The iLASIK procedure is the first to incorporate two lasers with the ability to tailor a patient's laser vision correction to each individual eye from start to finish. This laser technology has truly revolutionized the way laser vision correction is performed.

Excimer Laser Technology

The crown jewel of the customized iLASIK procedure is the Advanced CustomVue™ procedure using the VISX™ Star S4 Excimer Laser Technology, which stands in a class of its own with the broadest range of FDA-approved indications of any technology. Excimer laser technology has the unique ability to remove exceptionally fine layers of surface material with almost no heating and without affecting surrounding tissue. Incorporating the precision of wavefront guidance, the Advanced CustomVue™ LASIK procedure treats low-to-severe nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty

Selective laser trabeculoplasty, or SLT, is laser technology designed to treat procedures/glaucoma. The SLT laser technology uses a combination of frequencies that allows the laser to work at very low levels. The SLT targets specific cells, leaving untreated areas intact; therefore, SLT can be performed multiple times if necessary.
