In a historic moment for the United States bobsled team, Steven Holcomb piloted bobsled USA-1 to the Olympic gold medal in the four-man event, ending a 62-year Olympic medal drought for the American. Holcomb’s heroic mastery of the treacherous track is made even more significant by the fact that not long ago, he had 20/500 vision -- "profound visual impairment" caused by keratoconus-- that very nearly ended his bobsledding career. In the United States, surgical extraction of the age-related cataract is the most-performed operation in patients above 65 years of age. A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of the eye, which is removed in cataract surgery. Prior to the latter part of the twentieth century, the cataract surgery procedure left the eye without a lens, or aphakic. An aphakic eye typically needs very thick spectacle correction to see well, but it could generally see much better with those glasses than the same eye did prior to removal of a severe cataract. Black Hills Regional Eye Institute is excited to welcome over 100 optometrists and their staff to our annual spring continuing education program on Saturday, March 6.  Attendees are coming from five states and will receive education on iLASIK technology, customer service, lens technology, ICL technology, eyelid lesions, the iFS laser, and types of corneal transplants. The Eye Institute is proud to feature our new physicians including Terry Spencer, MD; Kristin Tarbet, MD, and Steve Khachikian, MD during the optometric program.
